Miss Congeniality is chosen by the contestants themselves. From 1952-1964, because Miss USA and Miss Universe were held together, Miss Congeniality could be won by contestants from either pageant. Miss Congeniality has also been referred to as Miss Amity, Miss Friendship and Miss Unity.
Miss Photogenic was initially chosen by the press. In recent years, however, Miss Photogenic has been chosen by an Internet vote.¹ In 1999, Miss Photogenic was chosen using a combination of the two methods. From 1952-1964, because Miss USA and Miss Universe were held together, Miss Photogenic could be won by contestants from either pageant.
